SETTING:            In the heart of the concrete jungle.  You smell grapes in the air        and a lot of trees.

TIME:

7:00 at night on Saturday the 7th

AT RISE:

WEEZY is walking to the hut from just talking to his friends.  He has a mad look on his face and he’s shaking his head.   He enters the hut.

WEEZY

(he roars, then screams)   Man!   I’m getting tired of this stuff.

NIECY

What the hell is wrong with you boy?

WEEZY

(mad)  One of my homies just got attacked by the hyenas from the other side.

NIECY

(sarcastic)   And what that got to do with you?

WEEZY

(mad)  What you mean what that gotta do with me.   That’s the homies, that’s what it got to do with me.

NIECY

You always find away to get into something.  Why can’t ya’ll never do nothing good with ya’ll lives?

WEEZY

Every time we try to do something, them hyenas from the other side always messing stuff up.

NIECY

That’s a damn shame.   I can’t keep going through this mess with you.  Every time I turn around you always in something.   Aren’t you tired of living yo life this way?

WEEZY

To keep it real with you Mom, I’m not.  I mean I’m getting tired of getting shot at by the hunters and getting attacked by the hyenas but everything else is all good.   The chips coming in good.  What can be wrong with that?

NIECY

Your freedom, Weezy.  That’s what can be wrong.  If you continue the things you doing, you going to be locked up in a cage or end up 6 feet under the ground.  Think about your lil’ brothers.   They look up to you.   You wouldn’t want them to do the things you do, would you?

WEEZY

No, that’s why I don’t bring my problems around them.  I don’t even let them walk around the jungle with me.   I don’t even…

NIECY

(screams)   Do you hear what the hell you saying?  You don’t even spend time with them.  They always asking me, “Mom, where Weezy at?  I want to go with Weezy,” but you’re never around to be found.   How do you think they feel when I tell them you’ll be home in a couple of minutes but you never show up?  That shows them I don’t have control of my own son.  I’m not about to let them think that it’s alright for them to grow up to be that way.

WEEZY

They not gon’ grow up to be like that.  I won’t let them live the lifestyle I’m living.  Hopefully I can make enough chips to move y’all up outta here but until then I’ma….   Nothing, nevermind.

NIECY

Until then you’re going to what?

WEEZY

I said nevermind.

NIECY

Whatever.   But since you brought up moving I need to talk to you about something.

WEEZY

Talk to me about what?

NIECY

Nothing, nevermind.

WEEZY

Say what you gotta say.

NIECY

Now you see how I feel when you do that.

(NIECY walks out the room) (WEEZY walks to his tune box and turns it on.   A tune comes on that he likes and he starts singing it)

WEEZY

If I don’t do nothing I’m a ball.

I’m counting all day like a clock on the wall.

Say go and get your chips lil’ concrete jungle lion,

Say go and get your chips lil’ concrete jungle lion, get chips.

I ain’t never ran from a hyena

and I damn sho ain’t bout to pick today to start runnin’.

Get chipas.

(WEEZY turns off the tune box and walks to his Mom’s room)

WEEZY

Mom, we need to talk.

NIECY

What we need to talk about?

WEEZY

Me and the homies came up with a plan.

NIECY

What kind of plan did y’all come up with?

WEEZY

A plan to take over the jungle

NIECY

Boy, are you crazy?

WEEZY

Before you start yelling…

NIECY

What the hell are you thinking?   Taking over this filthy jungle is stupid.   Do you hear how you sound?

WEEZY

You didn’t even let me explain to you why we came up with this plan.

NIECY

I don’t need to hear no explanation.   I think it’s stupid and you’re not going to do it.

WEEZY

What you mean I’m not gon’ do it.  I’m not your lil’ boy anymore.   I’m 17 and I can do whatever I wanna do.

NIECY

I don’t care how old you are, if I say you’re not doing nothing, you’re not doing it.  No if’s, and’s, or buts about it.

WEEZY

But, Mom…

NIECY

“But Mom” nothing.   You’re not doin’ it and that’s final.

WEEZY

I’m getting tired of my homies getting attacked and killed.   Every time you turn around you hear about some lion getting killed.   They’re either getting shot by some hunter or attacked by some hyenas.

NIECY

I don’t care…

WEEZY

Think about yourself, and my brothers and sister.  Y’all be able to walk around the jungle with no problem.  You always complaining about not being able to walk around without worrying about something happening.  You said you wish that something could take away this drama.  Your wish could come true tonight.

NIECY

Don’t talk about me thinking about your brothers and sister.  You’re the one that’s not thinking about them.  This stupid plan you’re talking about can take you out their lives for good.  It’s bad enough that you’re gone almost all day and all night.  Just imagine how they will feel if you’re gone for good.  You need to stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about your family.  You always saying what you gon’ do with your brothers when they get older.   You won’t be able to do it if you do this stupid plan

WEEZY

You got a point but….

NIECY

But nothing, Weezy.  If I got a point then you shouldn’t go do it.

WEEZY

You don’t understand though.  It’s easy for you to say it’s stupid because you’re not in this situation.  You don’t live the lifestyle I live.  Put yourself in my paws for a day and see the things I have to go through then you’ll see it’s not as easy as it sounds.  I already promised the homies that we’re going to do this and they’ll be mad if I let them down.  They need me, Mom and I’m going to be there for them.  I’m not going to let them down.

NIECY

So basically you sayin’ your so called ‘homies’ are more important than your family?

WEEZY

No, that’s not what I’m saying.

NIECY

Then what are you saying, Weezy?   You know what?   You don’t even have to answer that ‘cause I’m giving you a choice.

WEEZY

A choice?

NIECY

Yes, a choice.  You can go through with your theory and say goodbye to your family or tell your homies you’re not going to do this and pack up your stuff and move with us.

WEEZY

(aside)   Did she just say ‘move’?   (back to Niecy)   What you mean move?

NIECY

I was planning on telling you this a while ago, but I didn’t know how to tell you, but now it’s a good time to tell you.  We’re moving to a nice tropical island and if you want to come, then tell your homies you’re not going to do it; but if you don’t want to come, then stay here and say goodbye to your family.

WEEZY

How you go put me in this situation?

NIECY

Because I’m tired of going through this drama with you.  You been putting your homies before your family for the longest time and I’m fed up.  So what’s it going to be?

WEEZY

You know you and my brothers and sister mean so much to me.  You guys are more important to me than anything in this world.  I’ll do anything for you guys.

NIECY

If you’ll do anything for us then come with us.  I don’t want to lose you to the jungle.  Come to your senses and think about the big future.  You have plans.  You promise your brothers you’re going to take them places.  Think hard, Weezy, ‘cause we’re leaving in a couple of days.

(WEEZY sits and thinks about everything his Mom said and how much pain he’ll cause to them if he goes through with his plan.   He’s taking to long to answer, so NIECY starts to walk out of the room….)

WEEZY

Mom, wait.

(NIECY stops)

NIECY

What?

WEEZY

I love you.

NIECY

What’s that supposed to mean?

WEEZY

I thought hard about it.  I came to my senses and thought hard about what you said.  To keep it real with you, I really want to do this with the homies ‘cause I don’t want to let them down.  But like I said, family comes first, so I’m coming with you guys.

THE END
