When Wishes Cross
A Play by Alex Milan

Performance: May, 2003
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time:The crack of dawn in the hot summer weather
Place:Hideout in a land called Catastrophe in Forbidden Jungle.
Between two enormous boulders with the markings that tell about the Great Valley. There is a smell of hot lava and ashes from the volcano. In the Forbidden Jungle it smells like many exotic plants and flowers that smell fresh.

At Rise: RINN is taking a nap when RAMSEY dashes in screaming for RINN and looking for him.

Ramsey:

RINN! RINN! Where are you? I have to tell you something that’s urgent!

Rinn:

(RINN waking up from his sleep. With a fussing voice) What! I’m sleeping. What do you want now?

Ramsey: (gasping for breath after a long run) RINN! KIMMY and NALA told me that TORANGE has found our hideout and the CUT THROAT GANG is coming to the Forbidden Jungle to hunt us right now.
Rinn:

(replies with sarcasm) Oooooh, my God…really then we should get the pack and run away and not try to put up a fight.

Ramsey:

(with a serious look) Yeah, let’s go!

Rinn: (continues to act sarcastic) OK, you can lead to …
Ramsey: (says with amazement) Really
Rinn:

(smiles) Sike!! (starts laughing)

Ramsey: No, I’m serious. We have to go. You must gather the pack and we must leave, right this instant.
Rinn: I don’t want to leave because of some stupid sataurs. This is where I was born and this is where I want to die, my homeland.
Ramsey: (sympathetically) I don’t want to leave either. I don’t wanna leave home. But that’s what father would do. Think about the pack not only yourself.
Rinn: You don’t get it don’t you. Staying here and being a great leader like father is my wish.
Ramsey: You could be a great leader anywhere. Why do you want to stay anyway. Tomorrow Catastrophe’s food supply will be gone and we will starve.
Rinn: (looks at RAMSEY in the eyes) If you’re not with me then you’re against me. And if you’re trying to take the pack from me then I’m going to have to take you down.
Ramsey: Why do you have to do that for I thought I was your brother.
Rinn: I don’t want to. But you are trying to take the pack and leave me. I care about the pack and I care about you. You are my brother, my best friend, and the pack is my family.
Ramsey: Then why don’t you go with us?
Rinn: (sighs) Because this is my home and I love this land with all my heart. It is my pride.
Ramsey: Don’t you care about us RINN? We will die. Our race will be no more.
Rinn:

I do care but I really don’t want to go and where will we go anyway?

Ramsey:

All of us could go somewhere else and you could be a great leader there. (points to the walls) Remember the markings on the wall. They tell a story of the great valley and how to get there. Father told me that before he died.

Rinn:

No he didn’t, you lie!

Ramsey: Yes, and I think he was trying to tell me to tell you to lead the pack to the great valley before he passed away.
Rinn: How dare you use our father to lie. (pounces on RAMSEY and pins him down) The worst part is you used him to lie to me, your own blood. (a tear falls from his eye)
Ramsey: (pushes RINN off and yells) I’m not a liar! He did tell me what I just said. If you don’t want to believe me then so be it. I will convince the pack to go with me to the great valley and lead them there, if I have to leave you then I will.
(RAMSEY turns his back on RINN and begins to walk away)
Rinn: Nooo! You will not take my pack away from me.
(RINN jumps on RAMSEY and strikes him. RAMSEY strikes back. The two of them fall out of the cave and continue to fight. All of a sudden an arrow comes out of nowhere and pirces through RAMSEY’s back and through his heart. RINN is shocked and stares at RAMSEY and RAMSEY looks at the blood and stares back. RINN looks at the jungle to see TORANGE smiling and waiting for the rest of his gang before he strikes again.)
Rinn: (holding RAMSEY in his arms) RAMSEY! RAMSEY! You have to make it. I need you. I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I should have gotten hit not you. (tears fall, RINN cries)
Ramsey: It’s not your fault. Listen I want you to get the pack and lead them to the Great Valley. This is my wish. Please do this for me.
Rinn: OK, I will.
Ramsey: (tears fall from his eyes) Thank you brother I still love you no matter what you are my brother.
Rinn: I love you too brother. (RAMSEY dies in his arms. RAMSEY continues to himself) I will lead the pack to the Great Valley, but not for me. For my brother, for you. I feel like this is my fault. I feel guilty for my brother’s death. If I had listened to him, he would still be alive. We would be at Great Valley hanging out. Man I’m so selfish. I was thinking about what I wanted the whole time and not about my family. Maybe RAMSEY should have been the leader instead of me. I’d do anything to get him back. RAMSEY I miss you already.
