In the morning, a little after dawn.
Place:The Water Tree is in the very back of the jungle..  Where all you see is water and huge tall trees.  The water is blue as the sun casts its reflection onto it.. There is green grass all over with small animals scurrying around in search of food and shelter.
At Rise: Pahji is talking to himself as he goes to see his friend Water the water tree.

Pahji:

I woke up this morning to the sun shining inside of my cave…I quickly became alert to the sound of humans roaming the premasis.  Right away I knew that it was going to be another day of hiding. I have to go visit my friend Water “The Water Tree”.  As my brother and me sprinted off trying not to let the humans see us, Afraid of the cruel children that hit and poke at us. As I ran, I thought about how it was before the humans… Then I quickly came back to the harsh reality that I live.
(Pahji arrives to where the water tree lives with tears streaming down his face. The water tree is singing.)

Water Tree:

(SINGING): Please God please don’t let these men come and kill me! I’ve been around 400 years and I want to stay around. But I am willing to give my life to save my lil friend (Pahji)… He’s just an innocent baby. He’s the first creature that has truly loved me. Loves me not just for my fruit and shade, but for me. I love him like own.
(Pahji climbs up into the water tree, and he is crying).

Water Tree: My friend has arrived.

Pahji:

It was horrible! I watched them beat my father to death! Last nite he was killed by the white men. He was going crazy while the white men just kicked and beat him, then dragged him away…With his body all limp, right than I knew I’d never see him again.

Water Tree:

Don’t cry sweetheart. You’ll soon be free from all this torment.

Pahji:   What do you mean?

Water Tree:   (Aside) I don’t want him to be in any more pain.

Water Tree:

You have to get away from here, you have to leave.

Pahji:   Me Leave, with who, where will I go?

Water Tree::   By yourself, far away.

Pahji:   Me leave my brother, never!!We have no family I have to stay here and fight for him, defend him, because my father’s dead.My mother disowned us saying we now had to fend for ourselves because our father was gone. I’m the dominant one and I’ll take care of my brother.

Water Tree:   You have to leave and save yourself, think about your own life. I understand you love your brother but don’t you love yourself?
(Pahji starts crying harder)

Pahji:   I love myself but I love my brother more, and I refuse to sit back and just watch him die when I could’ve helped.
(BOOM, BOOM, BOOM  Gunshots sound off.)

Pahji:   I feel abandoned by my father’s death and I don’t want my brother to go through that again.

Water Tree:   Talk to your brother about leaving.

Pahji:   He’s not gonna want to leave, he’s gonna want to stay with my mother.

Water Tree:   Remember you’re the dominant one, make him want to go. Explain to him how you’re mother disowned you guys.

Water Tree:   You would make your father so disappointed if he were alive…You’re just sittin here cryin and sittin around, when you can make it out alive…

Pahji:   I wouldn’t want my father to be disappointed in me! (crying)

Water Tree:

Than leave damn it… Just go!

Pahji:

I want to … But what about Pahjuan?
(Water Tree turns his head cause he doesn’t want to look into Pahji’s eyes.)

Water Tree:

I’ll make sure he’s taken care of.

Pahji:   Are you sure?

Water Tree:   (Aside Speaking to self)
That’s my best friend, How can I lie to him, but I have no choice.  His brother’s gonna die, and Pahji’s never gonna know.

Water Tree:   I’m positive…Now go!

Pahji:   I don’t want to leave you, you’re my best friend, you’ve always been there for me and I love you for it.

Water Tree:   I love you too, now please leave before it’s too late.
(Pahji hugs the tree and stares directly into waters eyes and runs off. As Pahji runs off Water whispers.)

Water Tree:   I’m sorry.
