Shining
A Play by Hazel Silva

Performance: May, 2002
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time: Six in the evening
Place:In a mansion, in Darlene’s room. We see mirrors all around. Darlene likes to look at herself shining. She’s on a big pillow. She says to herself, “Damn, I’m beautiful”. She hears her admirers’ “oo’s and ah’s. She feels her big pillow. She tastes glamour, and smells jealousy

At Rise: Darlene is in her room.

Darlene:

(looking in a mirror)
I am so beautiful but I really need to convince Starnight to grant my wish. Right now I feel ugly. I’m so stressed out. Tomorrow I might not be here with all these mirrors, my comfy pillow, and my owner, Nelly. (cries) I’m going to miss my owner. I’ve been here for so long and I was his only diamond. Tomorrow he’s going shopping and he might buy another diamond. He’s going to take me to be appraised. That’s when he will know who is more valuable.

Starnight, star bright, Please make my day right
I asked you once to grant my wish
But instead you turn around and I got dissed
So please come down, Starnight, star bright.

Starnight:

I told you, Darlene, I’m not going to grant your wish.

Darlene: But why, Starnight? We been friends for a long time. All I’m asking for is to be the most valuable diamond in the world.

Starnight:   Please! Darlene. I don’t care. In fact, what do I get out of it? I don’t get anything but to see some conceited diamond get her way.

Darlene:

Conceited? What do you mean? Look at me. I worked so hard to look like this. I polished myself everyday, eat my sparkles to shine.

Starnight:

Your sparkles?

Darlene:   Yes, my sparkles.

Starnight:   So, you’re saying that you shine so bright because you eat sparkles.

Darlene:

Yes.

Starnight:   I don’t think you should shine the way you do. I should be the brightest, but a conceited dime like you is standing in my way.

Darlene:   How am I standing in your way?

Starnight:   You shine so bright. The city stands out because of you. But I don’t think that’s fair. I don’t understand why people admire you, what do you do for them? Nothing! No one appreciates what I do. I done most of your admirers favors, but the day they wish upon you….

Darlene:   (interrupting)
Wait, wait. I don’t care about that now. You know how much my owner means to me. And if I don’t get my wish he will pawn me. Tomorrow he is going to the store and if he sees that the other diamond is worth more than me, then I’ll lose everything, my house, my owner, my pillow, my glass case, and my precious mirrors. I will feel devastated.

Starnight:   Darlene, Darlene, Darlene. I don’t care about your crisis.

Darlene:   Come on Starnight. I been there for you. Do you remember a long time ago? When you first got noticed. It was because of me.

Starnight:   How is that?

Darlene:   I remember like it was yesterday. I was looking real bright and glistening real nice. My admirers was complimenting me. My shines was going out the window, and one of my admirers was, like, I’m going to look out the window to see how far you shine, and he looked up in the sky and noticed you.

Starnight:   Oh yea.

Darlene:   Come on, Starnight. You know you’re the most brightest star in the sky.

Starnight:   There are two reasons why I don’t want to grant your wish. For one, I’m jealous that you are brighter than me but that’s really not the case. I’m afraid that I’m going to lose you. If you become the most valuable diamond you will be in danger for the rest of your life.

Darlene:

Why do you think that?

Starnight:

Because everyone will want you and want to steal you. And if someone steals you I won’t be able to see you and you would probably be terrified. We been friends for a long time and I don’t want to lose you to a stranger.

Darlene:

Oh Starnight, you still care about me.

Starnight:   I might care about you but I’m still not going to grant you your wish.

Darlene:   You don’t understand. If I get pawned, then I won’t be able to see you anymore. I will be kept in a room with diamonds and jewelry that aren’t worth anything. I will be trapped like I was in jail. Besides, I won’t have any mirrors to look at myself.

Starnight:   There you go always trying to look at yourself. You are really something. I think you deserve to go to the pawn shop.
(Starnight leaves)

  SCENE II
Place:
Pawn shop.
At rise:
Darlene is in the crowded, dirty pawn shop, with fake jewelry. She smells fear and tastes misery.

Darlene:   I can’t believe she didn’t grant my wish. That wicked star was really jealous of me. I hate her. Look at me in this ugly room with all this worthless junk. (beat) I shouldn’t be talking like this. There is nothing I can do. I’m going to be stuck here for a very long time. I have no privacy, nothing. (cry)My owner is gone, and bought a new diamond. I lost my only friend and now I’m staying in a display case with all….
(Darlene cries and goes to sleep ‘till 9:00pm)
I’m still here. I wish this was only a dream. I can’t live like this. I feel so lonely. This is the time Starnight comes down to see me. I miss her. I would give anything if I was at home. I wish I was talking to Starnight.

Starnight:   Here I am.

Darlene:   What are you doing here?

Starnight:   So, I see that you don’t like it here.

Darlene:   You think!

Starnight:   Don’t give me any crap right now.

Darlene:   I’m not.

Starnight:   I just wanted to see how you are doing.

Darlene:   Well, you can leave now. As you can see I’m living real lavish.

Starnight:   Whatever, Darlene. I guess this is it.

Darlene:   No, wait, listen. Starnight, I just want to let you know that I’m really going to miss you. We been through a lot and I just wanted to say thank you for being there for me. Because of you I always had someone to talk to.

Starnight:   You mean it. I always thought you got irritated when I talked for hours over what people wish for.

Darlene:   No, I was interested in what you had to say.

Starnight:   But I feel bad.

Darlene:   Why do you feel bad?

Starnight:   Because you seem miserable not being at home. I remember you telling me how it was before your owner, Nelly, bought you. You was in a jewelry store all alone and now you’re here in a lower place, a pawn shop. I know you don’t want to go through what you went through. You’re going to be lonely all over again.

Darlene:   So, is it too late to grant my wish.

Starnight:   What makes you think I’m going to grant your wish.

Darlene:   Because you know how unhappy I am right now and you want to see me happy.

Starnight:   You’re right. Even though you might be in danger. I’ll do all I can to protect you from all those thieves out there. Are you ready.

Darlene:   Been ready.

Starnight:   I’m a lucky star
I stay in the sky real far
Your wish is my command
So don’t worry about a thang.
(So, that’s when diamond lights up.)

    The End.
