A Play
By Lizzy Tye

Performance: February, 2002
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time: noon, summertime.
Place: Sabola the Tiger and Rahj the Tiger's special mountain, spacious, not too many trees, beautiful view of the rest of the forest and the waterfall, and a lot of bright green grass.
At Rise: Sabola and Rahj sitting on their special mountain looking down at the view.

Sabola:

Uhhh, Rahj, you know I have to go see Jasmine today?
Long pause

Rahj:

Yeah, I know Sabola.
When?

Sabola: In about an hour.
Rahj:

No, Sabola, why so soon?

Sabola:

I have to see her before Vicious gets to her, and you know her wants her. I'm a male tiger and it's time for me to marry, and so do other male tigers.
Giving her a sly look.

Rahj: Sabola, I don't like that look you just gave me, what's up our sleeve?
Sabola: Nothing, I'm just saying I'm not the only male tiger that needs or wants to be married.
Rahj:

I need you, Sabola.
Pause
You know I do. She's going to take my place!

Sabola: Rahj, I have only one sister named Rahj, Jasmine is going to be my wife, she could never take your place. And when I say that I mean it.
Rahj: It's still not going to be the same Sabola! I won't fully have the brother I've always known. Jasmine will have the other half of you.
Sabola: What am I supposed to do the rest of my life if I don't marry Jasmine? She's the one Rahj, I have to have her, but then I have to have you with me. See, it's not like I'm going somewhere far away, I'm still here for you.
Rahj: What am I supposed to do all day long without you around? I don't like hanging with Surina she's too conceited.
Sabola: I will be around Rahj, that's what I'm trying to tell you, just not all day long.
Rahj: See, you just said it for yourself, "not all day long"!
Sabola: laughing, says:
Rahj, we're growing up we have to start our lives, you have to focus on your future now.
Rahj: What do you mean future? I don't know how to start a future.
Sabola: Your future is what you're destined to do, like marry.
Rahj: Laughing really hard
Like who?
Sabola: I don't know, but you do.

Rahj:

Come on Sabola, stop it. Don't change the subject.

Sabola:

Okay, what if I said I want you to get married soon, so you can be happy too?

Rahj:

It sound good, but there no tiger out here for me.

Sabola: Rahj...
Rahj: What! OK, maybe I do like Amaud but so what.
Sabola: What if I said he wants to marry you?
Rahj: You know I've never even tried to have a full conversation with another male tiger. I wouldn't know how to act once we were married.
Sabola: Yes you will, you're naturally caring and lovable, you'll make the perfect wife.
Rahj: It sounds like you're making Amaud your escape.
Sabola: Sarcastically
No dummy, I just want you to be happy too.
Rahj:

You make me happy,

Sabola: Cuts her off
So does Amaud, you just won't let it happen.
Rahj: I can't really say anything because Sabola, you're right.
Pause
I don't want to be alone.
Sabola says softly:
Sabola: When I said Amaud wants to marry you, he does.
Rahj: How? Why? What are you saying?
Sabola: Exactly what I said? So what do you say?
Rahj: .....O...K, no, that means I have to leave home.
Sabola: OK, you know how you love our little cousins so much and can't get enough of them, well you can have your own cubs now.
Rahj: It's tempting, and Amaud would make some cute cubs.
Sabola: So what do you say sis?
Rahj: If I do this will you still come around?
Sabola: OK, how about this, we can move into caves right next to each other?
Rahj: You promise?
Sabola: I promise!
Rahj: Sabola, you know what you need to do.
Sabola: What?
Rahj: Go get Jasmine.
Sabola: I have some time, now I have to get you to Amaud!
Alternate Ending:
Sabola: I have some time, let's just sit here for a while
Rahj: Alright Sabola.
Amaud comes walking up the path, Sabola spots him first
Sabola: Look Rahj.
Rahj: She freezes. Whispering:
Sabola now what?
Amaud: Hi Rahj.
Rahj: Hey.
Sabola: I told her everything.
Amaud: So, Rahj, will you marry me?
Rahj: Yes.
The End.
