Parent's Night
A Play by Charon McElroy

Performance: February, 2004
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time: 10:00 pm
Place: In the house, in the room of Shaniqua the moon. It’s white, it has two windows, it has six pictures on the wall of family. The bed is by the door.
At rise: Shaniqua the moon and her brother John, the moon, are sitting.

Shaniqua:

What are you going to do?

John:

What are you going to do?

Shaniqua: Are we going out together, or not?
John:

No.

Shaniqua:

Why?

John: ‘Cuz I don’t wanna be with you.
Shaniqua: Mom and Dad want to see us together, so you don’t have no choice.
John:

I don’t care what they want.

Shaniqua: You have to mind them.
John: How could I? They’re dead.
Shaniqua: You still have to listen.
John: How can I when I can’t hear them?
Shaniqua: But I can, so do what they say.
John: I don’t have to listen to you
Shaniqua: Yes you do, so do what I say.
John: You’re not my mom.
Shaniqua: I’m your older sister. I don’t wanna be your mom.
(John starts to get dark.)
John: Good, let it stay that way.
Shaniqua: You’re coming along with me.
John:

For what?

Shaniqua:

So mom and dad can see us together.

John:

For what reason?

Shaniqua: Mom and Dad said yesterday that we need to be together, when I went out the last time. They want to be proud. They want to see you because you’re older now.
John: What do we need to be together for?
Shaniqua: ‘Cuz it’s the right damn thing to do.
John: Why are you cussin’?
Shaniqua: Because I can. It’s time for you to learn how to be a moon.
John: Why do I have to go out with you?
Shaniqua: Because it’s the right thing to do, so get up.
John: No, I don’t want to. You’re getting me mad.
Shaniqua: So, I don’t care. You need to get up so we can go see mom and dad.
(she looks down at herself)
We’re getting darker. Why are we arguing? If we get darker, we can’t go see our parents. We need to get light again. You look funny.
(John makes a face and they both start laughing. They get light again.)
John: We’re getting light again. Why can’t I go out on my own?
Shaniqua: ‘Cuz, I’m afraid.
John: Afraid of what? Can’t nothin’ happen to me.
Shaniqua: You don’t know that. Dad said the same thing before he went out at night and he got hit by an airplane. You’re not goin’ out on your own.
John: Yes I can. Mind your own business. How would you know? I can be careful. I’m not gonna get hit by an airplane.
Shaniqua: How would you know that? Why don’t you want to go out with me?
John: I’m old enough to go out by myself. I’m a boy. You don’t need to be with me. It’s my first time goin’ out and I want to be alone.
Shaniqua: You’re only 10.
John: So, what’s that supposed to mean?
Shaniqua: You’re a little boy. You can’t go out by yourself.
John: No I’m not. I am old enough to go out.
(John stomps up the stairs, upset)
Shaniqua: (aside)
I really want him to go out with me, but he just won’t come. I don’t know what’s the big deal. I’m just his older sister. I think I’ll try to bribe him, maybe I’ll tell him I’ll give him something, so they I can convince him to come with me, so we can see our parents. My parents think I’m responsible enough to go out with my brother and I don’t want to have them mad at me.
(Calling)
John?
(John enters)
John: Can I help you?
Shaniqua: You wanna go to the store?
John: At this time of night do you think it’s open?
Shaniqua: Yah, I’m pretty sure.
John: Yah, I guess, we’ll try it.
Shaniqua: OK, come on, let’s go.
(they walk outside and go into a store. She buys him starburst)
Shaniqua: Do you want to go sit outside and eat candy?
John: Yes.
(They walk outside and are in the middle of the sky, shining.)
John: I’m seeing my dad. How did you do that?
Shaniqua: ‘Cuz they want to see us, so I did it.
John: I’m very proud that we did it. I’m sorry for giving you a hard time. I’m happy that I’m seeing my dad, but then I feel bad because I gave you a hard time. I’ll always remember this day, ‘cuz I seen my dad and I gave you a hard time. We shouldn’t argue anymore. I should do what you want, ‘cuz I know you love me.
Shaniqua: Yah. I do love you.
  The End.
