The Long Walk
A Play by Lynika Bass

Performance: February, 2002
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time:
5am. The sun is just coming out.
Place: Rodeo Blvd. in Beverly Hills.  They see clothing stores and a few cars parked on the street.  Trees and bushes are in front of the stores.  Coins are on the sidewalk and a water fountain is in the middle of the street. It’s quiet .  All they hear is each others paws hitting the cement.

At Rise: Snoop. a German Shepherd, and Dot, a Dalmation, and 4 other dogs walking to the park.  Snoop &  Dot are in the back of the group.  The other dogs are talking to each other.

Dot:

You know I’m leaving tomorrow.

Snoop:

Where you going?  You didn’t tell me nothing ‘bout you goin’ anywhere.

Dot: The training starts tomorrow.  You know where I go live at the fire house for 3 weeks and then I start working.

Snoop:

You can’t go. You can’t leave me.

Dot:

Why should I stay?  Don’t nobody care about me.  If I do this I’ll be famous.

Snoop:   I love you that’s why you can’t go. I care very much about you. Remember when you got sick and went to the hospital? I cried until I found out you was ok.

Dot:   What you love me, for real?  Whoa!  I never knew that.

Snoop:

I told you but you laughed at me.

Dot:   I am so sorry, I thought you was playin.

Snoop:   Naw I was dead serious I want you to have my puppies.

Dot:   Oh hell naw I ain’t havin’ no puppies, cuz then I’ll never be able to be a fire dog.

Snoop:   Your mama had you and she’ still a fire dog.

Dot:   Yeah but she had me after she became one.

Snoop:   Oh, but if you go what am I supposed to do?  I mean you just gonna leave me all heartbroken?

Dot:   Maybe you can go to training with me.

Snoop:   I never seen a German Shepherd as a fire dog.

Dot:   True but you can be the first.

Snoop:   I don’t want to be a fire dog. I want you.

Dot:   You can’t have me I’m leaving and that’s it.

Snoop:

So if you leave you ain’t gonna miss me?

Dot:

Yea I’ll miss you but this is all I ever wanted to do.

Snoop:

What about what I wanna do?

Dot:   You and that new dog down the street can make puppies.

Snoop:   I don’t like poodles they too high maintenance.

Dot:   I think you should be happy for me I’m not going to be a fire dog forever when I retire I’ll come back.

Snoop:   You know how I’m always there for you. If you leave who will you go to?

Dot:   I’m not sure…
(aside)
He’s rightI won’t have anyone that knows me for me except him. People just see me as just another dog like I have no feelings. Snoop knows me, he knows I have feelings, he know how easily I can get hurt. I mean I can’t just pick up a phone, I’m a dog.I don’t want to leave him but I don’t need to stay.If I leave he’d think I abandoned him. I’d think I left someone that really cared for me.

Snoop:   (waving his paw in front of Dot)
Hello, you still there?

Dot:   Yea, sorry I was thinking about what you said.

Snoop:   And…

Dot:   What are my options if I stay?

Snoop:   You can be my baby mama and make me happy.

Dot:   Yea but I’ll be unhappy because I never did what I wanted. I can go and be happy and be loved by everyone. If I became a fire dog everyone would know me.The kids would show me off. I’d be the most popular dog in Beverly Hills.

Snoop:   I’ll be all depressed if you go.

Dot:   Snoop, I never told you this but, I hate being here. My owners don’t pay any attention to me, They will be watchin’ TV and I’d be sittin’ right there next to them, and they won’t even pet me. The kids will stare at me more than they play with me. I don’t feel like I belong here.

Snoop:   I think your owners are nice at least you get to go inside their house. But the reason I need you to stay is ever since my brother and sister were born I haven’t felt loved by my mom or anybody really. It’s like I’m the man of the yard ever since they took my dad to the pound. I think if I became a father I would have my loving family.

Dot:   You’re the only reason I haven’t run away.I care about you. You’re my best friend, but I don’t love you like you love me.

Snoop:   So I guess I should just go get hit be a car.Since you don’t love me I have no reason to live.

Dot:   Nooo! Don’t do that, I couldn’t stand not to see you anymore.

Snoop:   Then you should stay.

Dot:   I guess so, but I really want to do this.

Snoop:   Wouldn’t you be happy with me.

Dot:   Yes but I would still be in the same situation with my owners.

Snoop:   Our puppies would show both of us happiness, neither one of us would be useless.  What if you get hurt?Didn’t one of your friends get burned really bad?I wouldn’t want that to happen to you.If being a fire dog wasn’t dangerous and you’d still live here, I wouldn’t mind you leaving but it’s not like that. And if you go you will probably never have puppies don’t you want a family? And you’re going to have to follow all those orders and rules. I know you don’t like that.

Dot:   What if I do go, I could get burned in a fire. I don’t want that. If I stay can we run away somewhere?

Snoop:   Yea we can go somewhere far away so you don’t have to ever see your owners anymore.

Dot:   Ok I’ll stay. I don’t want to be a fire dog it’s too dangerous.Ever since I was born I dreamed of having a family. My parents were kind of forcing me to follow in their footsteps, so I felt obligated to be a fire dog because that’s what Dalmations do. I was just going to make my parents proud of me.I’ve finally realized how much I really do love you.Can we leave now?

Snoop:   Yea let’s go.

Dot:   How are we going to get out of our leashes?

Snoop:   Chew it until it breaks. Mines is cheap it broke already.

Dot:   I can’t break mine, help me.
(Snoop runs over and chews her leash. It breaks. They turn and run down the street).

    The End.
