A Fight for Freedom
A Play by Kathy Perdomo

Performance: February, 2002
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time:
Noon (lunch time), Monday, summer 2002.
Place: The San Diego zoo inside an outdoor cage with no bars, practically free, with a lot of caves and hot rocks and hot sticky humidity that make all the animals cry.

At Rise: Iris the tiger & Jay J, her cousin were rudely awakened.  They were chained up & taken away.  Their hearts start pounding.

Jay J:

I told you they weren't going to kill us! You were panicking for nothing! Why in the heck would they kill the most beautiful and entertaining animals?
(Jay J was grooming himself)

Iris:

(Iris jumps on Jay J)
You shut your mouth!  You were scared too, don't even try to act like I was the only scardy cat!  I wasn't the one crying and trying to hold my hand.

Jay J: I was not crying, you just haven't showered and you're dusty and I'm allergic to dirty animals.  And I was not trying to hold your hand; I was just checking your pulse for you.

Iris:

Yea, ok Jay J,  (in an exaggerated voice) But seriously, I wonder why they put us in here?  Are they just trying to tease us about our freedom?

Jay J:

(Jumping around excitedly)
I know, I know! I over heard the manager of the zoo talking to the guards that they were going to put us here one of these days because it was going to be the last time we would be for display, because the circus manager would come pick both of us up, so we can be entertaining people on a show in the circus.

Iris:   If they only knew I have different plans. I always did say that the biggest mistake they could make is to put me here, under minimum security because I'm going to run away to my family.

Jay J:   What are you talking about?  Are you stupid?  Can you not comprehend!  If you go home you'll be a nobody, never be known for anything but just another tiger.  But if you go to the circus, you become famous.  You'll be known forever.

Iris:

That doesn't matter to me.  That's your dream, not mine!  My dream is to reunited with my family, to wake up every morning next to my husband.   I want to be held in his arms and feel safe again.  I don't want my food to be brought to me.  I don't want to have to wrestle with you to entertain everyone, so I can get an extra piece of that nasty meat.  I want to go hunting with my mom again and eat until I think I'm going to explode.  I want to hear my brothers tell me how much they look up to me.  That's what is important to me!

Jay J:   Why are you so selfish?  All you think about is yourself, only what you want.  Why don't you stop and think about me?  I've always been there for you!  You don't know how to return a favor?!

Iris:   Return a favor?  What are you talking about?  You should be happy I won't be around so you can get the spotlight at the circus!

Jay J:   It's not that easy!  They won't take me without you.  The circus manager wants a pair.  That's why I need you to stay.  All my life I've been a nobody.  I've always hid behind someone's shadow.  It's time I stepped out of it and became somebody.  All my life I've been told that I would never amount to anything.  I want to prove everyone wrong, and become the greatest tiger in the world.

Iris:   I understand where you're coming from, but I'm sorry we just have different ideas in mind.  I mean if it's meant for you to be famous then destiny will take care of it for you.

Jay J:   See that's a matter of chance, if you stay it will be a sure thing.  We've been through too much, all the beating, all those times you were scared and you needed some one, I was there.  Now I need you to be there for me.  Now I'm the one that's scared and needs someone to lean on, and you're the only one I have left in the whole world to make my dream come true.

Iris:   Why do you have to make this so hard for me?  I know you've done a lot for me and I thank you, but I just can't stay.  I can't go on with a fake smile and just pretend to always be happy.

Jay J:   Don't judge a book by its cover!  Why don't you just give the circus a try?  Who knows, you just might like it, and end up being happier than you ever imagined to be.

Iris:   You might be right, and I won't deny I am curious, but don't forget curiosity killed the cat, and it's just something I will just have to pass up, because I want to be with my family.

Jay J:   (Now irritated)
I've tried to be calm about this situation, but you're just not cooperating!  Look, one way or another you're going to stay.  You're not going to mess things up for me.  If you try to leave, Iris, I will call the guards.

Iris:   I'm sorry it had to be this way. It's too bad we had to say good-bye like this! I love you and I'll never forget you.
(Iris takes a few steps back and runs as fast as she can and jumps over the fence.  People scatter in fear.)

Jay J:   Damn it, Iris.
(Jay J starts crying and throws his food around. He gets frustrated because they don't understand him. They take a deeper look and realize Iris is missing and send out more guards..
These fools are too slow. I should just go catch her myself. I have a better chance, because they're to slow and they'll never catch her.
(Jay J hops the fence and runs trying to find Iris.)

Iris:

(Hiding behind the monkey cage)  Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. I should have jumped when no one was around.  Now I have the whole city after me! How about if I don't make it. No! I can't even bare to think what could happen to me if they catch me. I'm going to make it, I can do this!
(She makes a run for it.)

(As Iris is running towards the exit, Jay J spots her and runs towards her knocking her to the ground.)

Jay J:

I told you I wanted this too much!  And you were not going anywhere!

Iris:

It doesn't matter now; the circus isn't going to take me.  They don't want a crazy, wild animal in their show, so just let me go.  I'll tell your mom you think of her when I get there.

Jay J:   You know your right. Now they probably think I am one too, and it's all because of you! I Hate You! Now you're really not going nowhere. You're going to stay here forever!
(Jay J starts choking Iris with his big paws.)

Iris:   Don't do this Jay J. I don't want to hurt you. Don't underestimate a female.

Jay J:   What is a girl tiger going to do to a man tiger?
(Iris scratches Jay J's family jewels with her long toenails. He falls backwards, and she punches him a couple times and runs.)

Iris:   I'm almost there! I'm so close I could already taste the deer I'm going to hunt for dinner tonight.
(Jay J comes out of nowhere again & they start wrestling.)
I'm tired of playing games with you!  Don't make me do something I will regret!
(Jay J pays no attention and keeps on persisting. Iris turns her head and sees the guard coming towards them with chains.)

Iris:   (She looks into his eyes)
I love you, but you're in my way!
(She throws him off of her and bites him in his leg. The bite was so deep there was barely any leg left, but she had to make sure he would not get up again.)

Jay J:   (In agonizing pain)  Is this how you show your love?

Iris:   I'm sorry, I have to go.

Jay J:

I hope you die, since I am dead inside. I Hate You.
(As she is running away)

Iris:   He hates me now! Did I do the right thing? Is it worth it, to have my best friend hate me?
(She smiles.)
Yes, it is. I will never again know the meaning of hate.

    The End.
