Checkmate
A Play by Raymond Venegas

Performance: May, 2002
Thornton High School, Daly City

Time:Winter at midnight.  At dawn, the final battle begins.
Place:On the shelf, on their luxurious marble chessboard with emeralds & rubies & diamonds around it.

At Rise: King Capone is pacing back & forth.  His Queen is watching him.

Queen:

Can I speak with you, my Lord?

King:

Not now. Do you not know I am pondering on tomorrow's final battle?

Queen: It is always "not now".  It is urgent that I speak to thee, my Lord.

King:

Ok, Ok, Ok, go ahead; speak to me if it is so urgent.

Queen:

Why am I below my Lord?  Shouldn't I be beside thee?

King:   You know that's not the way.  How dare you come at me with such requests?

Queen:   I do not care if it is not your way.  Am I not the most important piece when thine play?

King:

This is outrageous.  Thou know this can never come to be a Queen beside thy King.  Do thee not understand tomorrow at dawn it will be do or die with thine old friend?  Something that thy is not proud of, but the power and love is all I can comprehend.

Queen:   Does thy Lord not know this is a game of mind, power, strategy, and patience?
Have you gone mad?  Has this silly world put you in a dimension of thine own?

King:   I shall not listen to this stupidity.  It is not a game.  It is life, blood, death, and power.  Where do thou get this madness?  Have you gone mad, my Queen?

Queen:   You shall listen to this stupidity!!!
I am tired of being put off.  You shall fulfill my request of power and to sit beside thee or you shall be with out a Queen in tomorrow so called life or death battle…or shall I say game?
(The King hits his Queen with his septer and she falls into the Bishop and Pawns.  The King, just realizing what he had done, tries to help his Queen get up and she slaps his hands away.)

King:   Please let me help you up.  I know not what I do.

(The Queen gets up on her own.)

Queen:   This is not the first time thy know not what thy do, and it shall certainly be the last.  I am leaving.  I shall not take abuse that is below my dignity.

King:   Please wait.  I have dwelled in a river of pride and glided down a boardwalk of greed.  I am sorry it took this for me to see the ignorance thy see.

(The Queen stops right before the door and turns.)

Queen:   Shall my Lord fulfill my request or shall I leave you and tomorrow you will not be at your best.

(The King sighs with reluctance and takes a minute to think.)

Shall it take so long for you to choose between power and me?  Thine love, thy do not see the ignorance I see.

King:   Do I not give you everything you want and need?
Do I not fulfill your fantasies and dreams?

Queen:   Thy do give me everything I want and need and trust me, thy do fulfill my fantasies and dreams, but thy do not give me the respect and power and authority that I have not only longed for, but need. I feel like a slave girl, a peasant. I need respect and power to feel content in life, to feel proud of myself, to go through the day and feel valued not worthless.  Do you not understand my feelings?

King:   My Queen, I am truly sorry that I make thee feel so demoralized. I shall put my ego in check. You will no longer be below; you shall be seated beside me on thy throne.

  Scene II

Time:Dawn
Place: The Battlefield
At Rise: King Capone and King Gambino are at war and Capone's Queen is in check.

King:

My Queen, retreat!  They've got you surrounded!  Please come back!

Queen:

One more move and I shall take this Kingdome for thy love.  One more move.

(The Queen makes her move and gets killed by Gambino's Bishop.)

King:

NOOOOOOOOO!  I love you, my Queen.
Why do thou not listen to me?

(The King, out of anger and love, puts himself in the middle of the battle and purposely puts himself between Gambino's two Rooks.  The king is put in checkmate and beheaded.)

    The End.
