A Beautiful Place, A Difficult Decision
A Play by Tara K.

Performance: November, 2002
Hillcrest Juvenile Hall, San Mateo

Time:Afternoon
Place:The beautiful garden behind the mystical waterfall. Rainbow-like dragonflies and busy buzzing bumble bees making trades of sweet honey to the flowers for pollen. Lots of green color. Eccentric colors, bugs, and flowers ranging from lights to pearls to darks. Birds serenading the garden. Hummingbirds always in a hurry. Small pathways of silky, perfumy petals and streams of blue-green maze through the garden. A great rainbow ends in the pond giving the pond pearly colors as it enters the water. Angelfish, goldfish, Chinese fighting fish and every time they jump through the rainbow, their colors change. You could hear the slimy bugs, ribbets, and belches. Garter snakes of all sorts of colors. Some so camouflaged the chance of finding them is slim to none. Other flowers are choppin’ it up about how other flowers’ scents and colors have faded and aged. Giggles from the baby’s breath. The wind whistles and the trees swaying and the most beautiful fragrances ever which the squirrels usually smell all day. White unicorns prance with their beautiful manes and tails dancing in the wind.

At Rise: Rosie sitting in her flower bed. Lily sits beside her.

Lily:

(empty)
Rosie, you know how much our friendship means to me and you know I would never, ever throw our friendship away. I would also never put our friendship on the line for your dream or any other decision you make. (look down)

Rosie:

(crushed)
I know you’re going to be too busy for me and so many other people will be your friends. You’re probably gonna forget about me. Remember when you first met me?

Lily: (picks her head up)
Yeah?
Rosie:

(looking down at her vines)
I wasn’t very silky. I was very under the weather. My leaves were starting to wilt. Then you discovered the beautiful garden and the first flower you came up to was me because you said I was so much different than everybody else. Just like you.

Lily:

(confused)
Yeah? You don’t look like that now. (makes hand gesture) What’re you trying to get at?

Rosie: (hurt, pointing at her, shouts and with tears streaming down her cheek)
I need love and attention to grow healthy and beautiful not on the outside, but the inside. Don’t’ you see? I became what I am today because of you. (still crying, abandoned)
You’re my inspiration to bloom. I need you and when you go I will start to wilt again and die.
Lily: (sitting, throws her hands in the air, shouts back)
I can’t believe you’d think I would leave you like that! (calmly) Don’t cry. You know I hate to see you cry. I’m disappointed. (mad) I thought you knew how much our friendship meant to me. You’re not the only one who care you know. Don’t be so selfish…
Rosie:

(interrupts, stands, hands on her hip, shouts no longer crying, she’s mad)
Selfish?!? Because I don’t want to die. I’m sorry you’re the inspiration of my whole existence.

Lily: (furious, shouts, jumps up)
I would never let you die you know that! (calm) And I will be here the day you bloom. (turns face away)
Rosie: (annoyed, pointing at her)
You know what Lily?
Lily: (sarcastic, looks up at her)
What.
Rosie: (vengeful, mugs)
You’re the biggest liar I’ve ever known!
Lily: (deflated, looks down)
Oh yeah? Maybe we shouldn’t be friends then.
Rosie: (regretful, crosses her arms, waves her hand)
Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Elections are tomorrow anyways. (waves her hand) So go, go be king (sarcastically) I don’t care.
Lily: (hesistates, still looking down)
I shouldn’t have been your friend in the first place. (turns away, sarcastically) A best friend that holds back their best friend’s dream because she’s insecure? (looks back up) Wow. What what a friend. You’ve changed so much. Before, you used to support my dream.
Rosie: (interrupts)
That’s because I never thought you would ever make it that far. (looks down) Well, I hoped you’d never make it that far.
Lily: (furious, looking her straight in the eye)
So the whole time you were lying to me?!? (throws hands in the air) What kind of a friend are you? Obviously not the one I grew up with. I always supported your dream. I gave you love and appreciation. I showed you I cared. I listened to you. I gave you everything a friend could. Did I not give you everything you needed as a friend?
Rosie: Of course you did, you’re the bestest friend I ever had.
Lily: (mournful, points to herself)
Then let me follow my dream and trust the Lily you met years ago become King of the Rainforest so I can make sure the beautiful garden will always be safe. I will take care of you. Just because you have to share me doesn’t mean I’ll never be around. There are so many hours in the day. Please still be my friend. I need you if I am to be King. I forgive you for all that you’ve said because I know you didn’t mean it because I didn’t either.
Rosie:

(sarcastically)
I did mean it.

Lily:

(astonished, hands on hips)
What?!?

Rosie:

(looks down)
I really don’t want you do become king, not because it’s your dream but because I’ve seen things like this happen before. (looks up) Remember Charlie, the snake? He used to be friends with Susie, the Queen bee before she was queen. She always had time for Charlie. And now her kids don’t even have time to play with Charlie.

Lily: (annoyed, pointing to herself)
I just want to be King so I can protect all the animals, plants, bugs, and the beautiful garden and the rainforest territory. I want the responsibility of being the one to come to when something’s wrong and have everyone’s eyes as my eyes.
Rosie: (points to herself)
Well, my dream is to be loved and appreciated so I can bloom and grow. Otherwise I’d wilt and die ‘cause I’d have nothing to bloom for.
Lily: (throwing hands in the air, very annoyed)
Don’t you get it? I’m not going to leave our friendship and I’ll NE-VER LET YOU DIE, ever, ever, ever, ever! Can you listen to me just once instead of me repeating myself?
Rosie: (Rolls her eyes and crosses her arms)
Lily: (wiggles her finger) Girl, don’t roll your eyes at me. I ain’t just anybody. I’m your best friend and probably your one and only friend with that attitude
Rosie: (points)
Anyways. You know what? Let me tell you something’ I’ve got plenty, PLENTY of friends to keep me alive. I don’t need you no more. So don’t waste your breath on anymore words. Just get to steppin’.
Lily: (surprised, hands on hips)
Oooh, girl! You did not just try and brush me off your shoulder like that! You know what? I ain’t even goin’ to trip anymore. Because you just told me that there are plenty of other friends to keep you up and alive so I will get to steppin’. (starts walking away, hesitates) I always wanted the best for you.
Rosie: Bounce. (throws thorns at Lily and one hits her)
Lily: (growls in pain because the thorn got her in the back paw, limping) What did you do that for? I could just step on you if I wanted to.
Rosie: (feeling sorry for herself)
Exactly! Just step on me now so I don’t have to go through the slow pain of death. Just do it. Consider it a favor. (closes her eyes and holds her hands together)
Lily: (sympathetic)
I would never step on you and you know it. Don’t try and put that guilt trip on me. Man, the things you’ll do for attention. Now just pull out this thorn so I can get going.
Rosie: (sad, feels awkward, twiddling her fingers)
Don’t leave. (pulls thorn out of paw) Talk to me a little longer.
Lily: (hesitant)
I’m telling you now that I’m going to be King.
Rosie: (raises her hand)
But…
Lily: (interrupts, uncomfortable)
Wait a minute. Let me just explain. You know the mystical pond towards the end of the garden? I saw a vision. It scared me.
Rosie: (curious, hand gesture)
What kind of vision?
Lily: (upset)
The vision was kind of blurry at first. It showed the rainforest and showed all the candidates for King. I was the only female. Then it showed what would happen if I just walked away. And I saw all the animals, bugs, and plant life slowly fading away. It told me I was the chosen one and if I don’t become King, all hell would break loose. So I am going to be King because all life is depending on me, including yours.
Rosie: (sorry, shrugs)
I didn’t know! Why didn’t you tell me in the first place? I feel like such a fool.
Lily: (understanding, points)
Because you wouldn’t let me and I didn’t want to scare you either.
Rosie: (hand to her heart)
I’m so sorry
Lily: (standing proud)
It’s okay, I am going to be King and I’m going to prove to you how good of a friend I am. Watch you’ll see. I’m here to protect all, big and small.
Rosie: (understanding)
You gotta do what you gotta do. This is such a beautiful place. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to it. This is our home and I wouldn’t trust it in anyone’s hands except for yours.
(they smile and hug)
